Translate Between Number Systems

What students learn

Students learn how to translate between Roman numerals and standard numbers without losing the value of the number. Open with Roman Numerals: Read Modern Years to see a real-world example of translation.

Why it matters

Translating between systems builds number sense because students must think about the value, not just the symbols. Roman Numerals: Check Written Answers shows a final check after the conversion is done.

Learn the idea

A strong translator can move in both directions: standard number to Roman numeral, and Roman numeral back to standard number. Compare Numbers: Use Place Value First reminds students to use place value when they return to the modern system.

Try it

Have the student convert 24, 49, 68, and 2024 into Roman numerals. Then ask them to translate XL, XC, and CXXIII back into standard form.

Parent guide

Ask the child to name the value of each part before writing the answer. If they make a mistake, have them check one symbol at a time instead of rewriting the whole number from memory.
