Factor Pairs and Prime Factorization
Students use factor pairs, trees, and repeated division to reach a prime factorization.
Factor Pairs and Prime Factorization
What students learn
Students learn that every factor pair multiplies to the same target number. Open with Factor Pairs Multiply to Make the Number to practice finding matching pairs.
Why it matters
Prime factorization is a way to keep breaking a number down until only primes are left. Prime Factorization Builds a Factor Tree shows the factor-tree method.
Learn the idea
Students should always check the rebuilt number at the end so the factors multiply back correctly. Prime Factorization Checks the Rebuilt Number reinforces that check.
Try it
Have the student factor 24, 30, and 36. Ask them to list the factor pairs, draw a factor tree, and write the prime factorization for each number.
Parent guide
Encourage the student to say each multiplication step out loud. If they stop too early, point back to the result and ask whether any factor can still be broken apart.
